Capacity, efficiency and specific programmes define a good washing machine. A big drum is not always better.
A well-chosen washing machine can last more than fifteen years. For one or two people, 7 kg is enough; for three or four, 8 or 9 kg; if you are five or more, go for 10 kg. Mid-to-high-range models include sensors that adjust water, time and temperature to the real load.
Format and installation
Standard measurements are approximately 85 × 60 × 60 cm. The all-in-one washer-dryer saves space, but dries worse and slower than two independent appliances. If you want to stack washer and dryer in a column, check that specific fixing kits exist for your two models.
Programmes and features
Beyond the standard programme, the ones actually used are: certified wool, microfibres and technical clothing, duvets and bulky garments, and a drum-maintenance programme that prevents odours. Stain programmes adjust the treatment to the type of stain. Connectivity is useful for deferring the wash to off-peak hours.
Efficiency and silence
A spin class of A or B means drier clothes when you take them out, which saves time on the line or in the dryer. Noise is an undervalued criterion: below 50 dB while washing and 70 dB while spinning, living with the machine improves notably.
Common mistakes
- Always washing at 40 °C "out of habit": most clothes come out impeccable at 30 °C with less consumption.
- Not levelling the machine at installation: vibrations, noise and premature breakdowns almost guaranteed.
- Confusing kilos of load with litres: what matters is the real weight of the dry clothes.
